Chef and restaurateur David Burke knows a thing or two about great food and hospitality, being the owner of seven restaurants around the country, the author of two cookbooks, and the force behind innovative ideas like gourmet cheesecake pops and 12nTm sparkling beverages. His weekend getaways to Newport, Rhode Island, are filled with the best local fare and blissful relaxation, topped off with some inventive menu-writing.
To get away from it all, I go to… I go to Newport, Rhode Island. My girlfriend was born and raised near there, and it’s the home of the prestigious Johnson & Wales, where my son went to culinary school.
The best way to get there is… I like to drive to Newport. I first make a stop at David Burke Prime at Foxwoods Resort & Casino, in Connecticut, for some good red meat!
My favorite place to stay is… Castle Hill Inn, because it’s peaceful and quiet.
My ideal travel companion is… My girlfriend.
When I’m in the mood for room service, my go-to order is… Clam cakes, oysters, Rhode Island chowder, and Providence-style calamari.
My favorite place to indulge in a delicious meal is… Tallulah on Thames and Bouchard Restaurant are two of my favorites. Newport has some of the best seafood all year round, so I like to take advantage of that while I’m there.
To stay in shape, my on-the-go fitness regime includes… Long walks through town and on the beach, kite flying, and throwing the Frisbee.
My suitcase absolutely must contain… Sport jackets, sunglasses, notepads, and my camera.
When it comes to packing, I’m an… Underpacker, because Newport has some fantastic shopping.
The best-kept secret about Newport is… Newport has many small restaurants with great food and lots of privacy. Many don’t think of Newport as a vacation destination, but it’s perfect for a weekend getaway for New Yorkers.
When I’m in the mood for retail therapy, I visit… Local bookstores and antique shops, including some great boutique clothing stores that offer handmade, one-of-a-kind items. Newport also has a fantastic “accessories scene,” and I always end up picking up a great pair of sunglasses or shoes.
To paint the town red, I hit… Usually Fluke Wine Bar & Kitchen, but most of the time I like to stay in and relax.
My favorite travel pastime is… As somewhat of a workaholic, I can’t go anywhere without my iPad.
Upon arrival to Newport, I most look forward to… Catching up on food and restaurant news with my magazines. I also travel with all of my restaurants’ menus and take the time to update them with all of the new inspirations I get while traveling.
Upon departure from Newport, I am most happy to leave behind… My stress along with my fully read magazines. I always feel refreshed and motivated after even just a weekend away.
